John Barber receives award

John Barber receives the Volunteer of Distinction Award from the Park District Board.

Jon Barber’s family set the example for his exemplary public service, and his mother encouraged his love of the outdoors by “locking us kids out of the house all day, so we played in the woods and creeks,” recalled Barber fondly.

Portage Park District Board, staff, volunteers and friends gathered recently at the Portage County Gardeners’ Center for the District’s First Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.  Jon Barber, who has volunteered as a commissioned Park Ranger for the last 6 years, was honored with the first-ever “Volunteer of Distinction Award."  Christine Craycroft, Director of the Park District, expressed appreciation for his years of service patrolling the parks, coordinating with other law enforcement agencies, addressing security concerns and assisting with special events.  “I don’t think there’s ever been a time, day or night, any day of the week, that Jon has said he couldn’t help out when asked,” said Craycroft.  “And for that, we owe his wife Jan a big thank you too!”

Barber, who is now Portage County Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, was also presented with a Proclamation from the Portage County Commissioners who lauded Jon’s generous contributions.  Sheriff Dave Doak also commended Barber for his selfless service to the community as a Special Deputy with the Sheriff’s Department.

Craycroft followed the award presentation with an overview of Park District activities and plans, expressing appreciation for the many contributions of other volunteers (including the Park Board members) who have helped with nature programs, maintenance and office work over the year.
