Barber receives Park District Volunteer of Distinction Award
Portage
Park District Board, staff, volunteers and friends gathered recently at
the Portage County Gardeners’ Center for the District’s First Annual
Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. Jon Barber, who has
volunteered as
a commissioned Park Ranger for the last 6 years, was honored with the
first-ever “Volunteer of Distinction Award."

Headwaters
Adventure Race 2009
The
Portage Park District and partners, Advanced Rehab of Mantua, Camp Hi
Canoe Livery, and the Village of Mantua hosted the Headwaters Adventure
Race last Saturday, July 11th, 2009.
Beginning at Buchert Park in
Mantua
Village, participants ran two
miles on the Headwaters Trail, biked ten miles along beautiful rural
roads to Camp Hi Livery, and then canoed and kayaked back to Buchert
Park
in Mantua on the Upper Cuyahoga State Scenic River.

Awards
This year’s Honorary Chair,
State Representative Kathleen Chandler, welcomed Guest Speaker Elaine
Marsh, Founder of Friends of the Crooked River and Ohio Greenways who
spoke on the benefits of trails and greenways. Funds from the event will be
used to create
and maintain hike and bike trails and to benefit the volunteer Trail
Stewardship program. Five awards for environmental activism were
