After experiencing a delicious meal and listening to the music of
Guy Pernetti, Parks Board Member Alan Orashan presented awards to
individuals and businesses who are contributing to the preservation of
the environment in Portage County through their efforts in
environmental education, green building, community activism and
stewardship. The awards were presented to: Jeff Sheehan of Garrettsville for Active community outreach and education in promoting environmental stewardship of our water resources. In addition to work as the
director of Garrettsville's Water Plant and Wastewater Treatment Plant,
he is a model for conservation of the land around the village. Each
year he hosts an Earth Day tree planting party where 900 native Ohio trees are planted near the plant in order to preserve the water table and well fields. He gives tours of the plants to area school students, sharing his passion for his work, his keen interest in science and his knowledge of the water cycle.
Susan Seene of Hiram for stewardship to support the Headwaters Trail. In addition to Seene's commitment to seasonal maintenance of the Headwaters Trail between Hiram and Mantua (mowing, grading, spreading and raking stones, and cleaning the leaves/debris in the culverts alongside the drive/bike path), she has planted trees and daylilies to decrease erosion and add beauty to the drive/bike path. She is a regular birdfeeder and has a respect for nature, learning more and more about how to live with our own natural resources. Matt Testa of Brady Lake, owner of Builders Diversified, for Leadership, creativity and action in Green Building, and advocating responsible and sustainable use of our resources. His company is retrofitting the old Brady School in Franklin Township into condos, using geothermal heat, energy efficiency, environmentally sound water, flooring and paint. He is reusing original furniture and fixtures. The property offers quick access to "The Portage" Bike & Hike Trail near Towners Woods Park. His company is also a vendor of green products. Rosche is an expert in the identification of damselflies, dragonflies and birds. He has recently completed the second edition of the Field Guide to Dragonflies of NE Ohio. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources
recently presented Roche with the agency's Cardinal Award for
Conservation, which honors individuals that demonstrate exceptional
awareness and concern helping to ensure a balance between the wise use and protection of our natural resources for the benefit of all.
