Portage Park District Plans for the Future

The Portage Park District is starting a Strategic Planning process that will outline goals and plans for the next 10 years. The Park District was formed in 1991, when the only county park was Towner’s Woods. It has grown steadily with the support of the County Commissioners, partner agencies and grants and donations from the community. Now, in addition to Towner’s Woods, the Park District manages Dix Park, Headwaters Trail, The PORTAGE Hike and Bike Trail, as well as 2 undeveloped park properties. “This is a critical time in Portage County’s history”, said Christine Craycroft, Executive Director of the Park District, “the County is rapidly developing, our water resources are in great demand, and wildlife areas are getting fragmented.

The Park District can play a very important role in conserving our natural heritage while developing a system of parks and trails that can provide many health and economic benefits”. The Plan will guide the Park District in determining where to create new parks and trails, and what kinds of programs and services to provide to the public.
